Chesterfield’s Page

My name is Chesterfield. My mom named me before she even knew me. She says she picked the name and then went looking for a border collie that fit the name. Good looking, but fun….I think she found that! Mom got me at the same time as she started Thyme on the Terrace. Right around 9/11. I came all the way from Spokane, Washington.

My birth parents

My birth mom’s name is Fran and my Dad’s name is Blaze. Here’s a link to Wildair Border Collies where you can read more about Fran and my brother Argyle! Both mom, dad, and two of my siblings are champions. I’m very proud of them!

A day in the life of Chesterfield

OK, so I may not a champion so what do I do? Well, one of my first responsibilities is to go with Mom to the shop and greet our customers. Everyone that comes is definitely coming to visit me! I’m sure of that because if I bring them a ball, they throw it! I’m in heaven.

But let me tell you about a typical day. Because I’m a busy boy, Mom had to come up with a schedule. Each morning, she gets up and takes me for a run. She says I’m doing her a favor by making sure she exercises, but I know better. She really has a contract with the Borough of West Chester for me to keep all the squirrels in the trees. As we run through the neighborhood, I locate squirrels and get them back into the trees where the rascally devils belong. Mom won’t tell me how much the contract is for, but I’m sure it has something to do with lots of tennis balls.

When we get back, Harry, my little brother, is waiting for us and we all have breakfast. Harry is a kitten. He can be a real pain sometimes, but I tolerate him. Then I make sure there are no SQ’s in the back yard. What’s an SQ? It’s the term Mom uses for squirrels when she’s talking to people and doesn’t want me excited….but I know better. I just quietly lay there and listen in, containing myself.

Then it’s off to work. Whether we’re going to Thyme on the Terrace, working in the garden or riding around, it can be a busy day. I have jobs regardless of what we’re doing. If we’re at Thyme on the Terrace, my job is to greet everyone and to play with kids. If we’re in the garden, my job is to help mom move big sticks and occasionally dig a hole for her (really! If she asks, I’ll help her dig a hole.).

In the late afternoon, we go for a run or walk at a near by park. Or sometimes, she takes me to the park and hits tennis balls with a racket so I can chase them. Neighbors sometimes come out and cheer for me when I do a really great catch. And then there are Tuesdays when I go to “work”. Mom takes me to agility training. I’m pretty good…in fact, Mom says that the only reason I ever mess up is because she messed up! At a later date, I’ll include some more information on my agility classes. After my run or agility, then it’s back home for a quick nap before dinner.

Once a week I get to go to Doggy Day Camp where I can run and play with the other dogs. They are so nice to me there and everyone gets along well. And they have lots of balls for me!

Chester’s favorite cookie recipe

My Aunt Mary makes a cookie for me that I just love. I’m pretty fussy when it comes to treats, but this one is the best. Mom keeps them frozen because Aunt Mary sends them in a batch to Mom because Aunt Mary lives far far away. I love them frozen, especially in the hot summer. Aunt Mary said it was OK to share her recipe with my friends.

Aunt Mary’s Doggy Cookie Recipe:

4 1/2 cups flour
1 cup quick cooking oatmeal
1/3 cup oil, (she likes to use Canola)
1 1/2 cups water
6 bouillon cubes
1/2 cup peanut butter

Microwave water and bouillon cubes about 2 min.
Mix flour and oatmeal.
Add hot bouillon mix, oil and peanut butter and mix.
Will make a stiff dough. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick.
Cut with bone cookie cutter.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet and cook 35 min. at 325.
Turn off oven and leave in oven till cooled. Makes 5-6 doz.

Hikes with Chesterfield

There is nothing better for me than a hike in the woods. Mom says that I smile when I hike because I can just run and run and run. I chase SQs and “chippies” (chipmunks). I love getting in the water to splash and play.

Some of my favorite places are French Creek, the Laurels Preserve, or Stroud’s Preserve. I love to hike with Mom even in the winter! Mom makes me put on little boots, though, in the winter, so I don’t cut up my paws or get snow stuck in them. They really work!
